BERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State Wolves (2-2-0) soccer team was unable to pull in a victory in their home opener, as the Cougars from the University of Sioux Falls (1-2-0) scored two late goals to score a 3-1 victory.

The Wolves had control of the first half but were unable to have any of their six first half goals land in the back of the net.

After 17 minutes of action went by in the second half and two shots off target, junior midfielder Liz Royce was able to find the back of the net. Junior Forward, Rachel Goslinga, dribbled up the right touchline and crossed over to Royce who was ready to put a play on the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, scored her first goal of the season.

It didn't take long for the Cougars to fight back, as they scored on a free kick from 19 yards out. After making a set play, Tasia Murray took the free kick that went just above the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Shaina Stein.

In what was a back and forth game, Sarah Stoebner of the Cougars, was able to sneak a ball through the Northern defense to forward Tasia Murray who was able to connect on her second goal of the evening in the eighty-seventh minute.

The Wolves would have one more opportunity to score in the game but were unable to connect. Senior Haley Burns took a shot from 12 yards out and Cougar goalkeeper Samantha Maybon made a spectacular save on the shot. Off the rebound Kachira Tugas got another great shot off, however Maybon got just enough hand on the ball for the save.

On the ensuing counter attack, Desiree Parmenter took a breakaway for the final goal of the match to give the Cougars the 3-1 victory.

The Wolves outshot the Cougars 16-10 in the match, while also holding the edge in shots on goal 6-2 respectively.

The Wolves return on Sunday Sept. 11, for a 3 p.m. matinee against Viterbo at Jerde Field.
