ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team clinched a team win over Northern State when SMSU's Martin Hagen earned a fall at 2:33 over
Baker Haar at 197 pounds sealing a 23-15 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Aberdeen.
SMSU improves to 8-4-1 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC while NSU moves to 3-10-1 and 0-7 in the NSIC.
The Mustangs earned two decisions to start the night with Travis Borchert taking a 3-1 win from
Corbin Surat at 125 pounds and Justin Reinsma defeating
Ian Muirhead, 7-5 at 133 pounds.
Benton Crow put Northern State on the board with a 3-1 decision over Ethan Hildebrandt at 141 pounds, making the overall score 6-3.
Blake Lundgren notched a 5-3 decision over Casey Field at 157 pounds adding three points to the team score to bring the Wolves within four at 10-6.
SMSU answered back earning a 9-4 decision from William Fate at 165 pounds over Neil Sell improving the Mustangs to 13-6.
After a scoreless first period,
Cale Cornemann pinned SMSU's C.D. Johnson 30 seconds into the second period, giving the Wolves their best chance of defeating the Mustangs moving the score to 17-12.
The following match, however, Martin Hagen earned a fall over NSU's
Baker Haar at 2:33 to seal the win for SMSU.
Matt Mueleners recorded a 3-1 decision over Brian Rodas to end the night.
The Wolves will head to Sioux Falls, S.D. for the NCAA Super Region #3 meet on Feb. 27.
