BROOKINGS, S.D. – The host South Dakota State Jackrabbits claimed victories in the first four contested matches of the night and used that early advantage and a quick pin at 197 pounds to take a 25-18 victory and hand the Northern State Wolves their first dual meet loss of the season Friday night in non-conference wrestling action.
The two teams traded open-bracket forfeits at 133 and 141 pounds, and the Jackrabbits earned three decisions and a major decision in the other four brackets to take a 19-6 lead into the 174-pound bout. NSU win three of the four remaining matches, but the late surge was not enough to overtake the host team.
NSU senior
Donnie Bowden returned the Wolves to the scoreboard with his 10-0 blanking of Joe Rasmussen at 174 pounds.
Chad Gibson followed with a 5-1 decision over Tony Lisek at 184 pounds, but SDSU countered with a first-period pin at 197 pounds, which sealed the victory for the Jackrabbits.
Matt Meuleners, however, closed the gap to the final score of 25-18 with his technical fall victory over SDSU's Joe Skow. Meuleners, the defending national champion and second-ranked wrestler at the heavyweight division, scored two three-point near falls in the first period and led 8-0 following the opening three minutes. Choosing down to start the second period, Meuleners needed just nine seconds to score a reversal, followed by two near fall moves and the eventual tech fall stoppage with 1:08 left in the period.
NSU now heads to Indianapolis for the annual Midwest Classic on Dec. 18-19 in their final tune-up before Christmas break and the following National Duals event in Chicago on Jan. 7-8.
