Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State Wolves (4-8-0, 1-6-0 NSIC) soccer team took the University of Minnesota Duluth (5-4-1, 5-2-0 NSIC), the third place team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, into double overtime, only to lose with just minutes to go. The final score read 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs after a brutal 106 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs took seven shots in the first 11 minutes of play with two of them put on goal.
The Wolves got their first shot of the match in the 19th minute with Kachira Tugas took a shot which was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Hanna Iazzo.
The first period would end in scoreless fashion on ten shots from the Bulldogs to four from the Wolves.
The Wolves would take charge to open the second half as they would take four shots in the first ten minutes, with three being placed on goal. Unable to find the back of the net, the Wolves would concede offensive control to the Bulldogs in the end of second half. The Bulldogs would take five shots in the last six minutes. Three of those shots were on goal and saved by freshman goalkeeper
Shaina Stein.
The last opportunity the Bulldogs would have in regulation was at the 89:40 mark when Maureen Stormont laced a shot that hit off the right post of the goal.
With the scoreless tie at the end of regulation, the game headed into the first overtime period where neither team was able to mount a strong charge. The game headed into the second overtime where the Bulldogs placed took seven shots with two being saved by Stein.
On the second save, Stein deflected the ball out of bounds setting up a corner kick by Jennifer Smith. Smith centered the ball into the 6-yard box, where Kelsey Gratz was able to secure the goal, and the win, for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.
The Wolves were lead in shots by Kachira Tugas and
Renee Gittings, with two shots apiece, including one on goal apiece. Five other Wolves each took shots on the day. The Wolves were outshot by the Bulldogs 10-31, respectively. The Bulldogs also had the advantage in shots on goal with 14-6.
Stein had 13 saves on 14 shots for the Wolves while her counterpart from the Bulldogs had five saves on six shots, with the sixth save coming on a team save.
The Wolves return to action on Sunday against Bemidji State University in a 1 p.m. showdown at Jerde Field in Aberdeen, S.D.
