ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Northern State women's basketball team held on to defeat the University of Mary, 60-57 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action tonight..
Northern State extends its winning streak to five games while the team's overall record improves to 12-5 (9-4 NSIC). Mary moves to 9-8 (6-7 NSIC).
With 3:35 left in the game,
Emily Becken drove hard to the rim to tie the score at 54 each after trailing the Maruders by as many as nine earlier in the half.
Neither team scored for the next two and a half minutes until
Krista Rabenberg knocked down two free-throws with 1:02 left in the game. With three seconds left in the game, Mary's Mckenzie Foster hit a three to give NSU a one-point advantage. A second later, Becken was fouled and sequentially knocked down both shots from the charity stripe. The Wolves hit seven of ten free-throws in the final minute of the game to hold on to the win.
Leading NSU was Becken with 16 points. She was followed by
Alison Kusler with 14 points while
Jodi Reinschmidt poured in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Northern jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game led by a Kusler three-pointer from the right side followed by a steal from her at the 17 minute mark.
Mary battled back however, and with 3: 28 left in the half, a jumper by Mary's Ali Collins brought the Maruders within two at 27-25.
For the first time all season, Northern went into the break with a tied scored at 27 all. Reinschmidt led Northern with eight points and four rebounds while Kusler poured in six points.
The Wolves shot 40 percent in the first half (11-27).
Reinschmidt poured eight points and four rebounds heading into the break followed by Kusler with six.
Northern State will return to the road when they take on Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State next weekend. Tip-off for both games is set for 6 p.m.
