ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University senior Maggie Fedor faked her defender right, then spun to the left, dribbled toward the end line, then put a strike in the far corner of the goal in the net to lift the Wolves past Minnesota State University, Mankato by a 1-0 score Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.
The win was the first NSIC victory for the Wolves, who were on a three-game tying streak prior to Sunday's match. NSU is now 3-2-4 overall and 1-0-3 in conference play. The Wolves remain undefeated in their last five games.
The Mavericks slipped to 3-4-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in league action.
MSU held a significant 21-10 edge in total shots on the day, particularly in the second half when they got off 15 shots to the Wolves' four. Only three of those 21 shots, however, were on goal. NSU senior goalkeeper Dee Wood made two saves, while the Wolves' defense was credited with a team save to keep the Mavericks off the scoreboard.
After Fedor's goal in the 64th minute – the fourth of the season for the senior – the Mavericks went to work on the NSU defense, firing off 12 of their 15 second period shots in the final 22 minutes of the game. The Wolves survived a scare in the 74th minute when MSU freshman Sydney Temple fired off a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar straight to the feet of sophomore Nicole Dooher. Dooher immediately launched a shot at the goal, but sent the ball straight into the arms of Wood.
Each team was whistled for nine fouls and took five corner kicks.
The Wolves remain at home next weekend to face Minnesota State Moorhead and Minnesota, Crookston in a pair of NSIC match-ups on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Game time is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, while first kick on Sunday is slated for 1 p.m.
