ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University came into Friday's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up against Southwest Minnesota State University looking for its first conference win of the season. Instead, the Wolves came away with their third straight double-overtime draw and the fourth of the season with a 1-1 tie.
The Wolves moved to 2-2-4 overall with the draw and 0-0-3 in NSIC play, while the Mustangs are now 1-3-1 and 0-2-1 in league action.
The Wolves got on the board first when junior
Katie Anderson fired a straight-on shot from 25 yards out that went over SMSU goalkeeper Kendra Olchefske's hands and into the top of the net. Senior
Maggie Fedor was credited with the assist, her fourth of the season.
The Mustangs struck back in the second half on a Kelly Fitzgerald goal just two minutes into the period. Fitzgerald picked up a Tatum Borstad pass and slipped the ball past NSU goalkeeper
Dee Wood from ten yards out.
NSU nearly came up with the winning goal on more than one occasion. Freshman midfielder
Mallory Van Hout, who took a game-high eight shots, found both the crossbar and the post and had a nice header shot off a second-period corner kick that nearly found its way around Olchefske and into the net.
Sophomore Liz Royce finished with six shots, while senior Kirsten Saunders had four.
For the Mustangs, Maggy Rouse and Fitzgerald combined for nine of the team's 16 total shots and five of the eight shots on goal.
The Wolves return to the pitch on Sunday to take on Minnesota State University, Mankato in another key NSIC match-up. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at NSU's Jerde Field.
