WAYNE, Neb. – Northern State University junior Ashley Elliott scored her first goal of the season in the 79th minute of play to rally the Wolves from a 2-1 deficit to a 2-2 double-overtime draw to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play against Wayne State College on Saturday.
The extra-stanza game, the third of the season for the Wolves, moves NSU to 2-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. WSC is now 3-1-1 overall and a similar 0-0-1 in the league.
NSU drew first blood on sophomore Liz Royce's first goal of the season. Royce found the net with a straight on shot from 25 yards out in the 23rd minute.
That lead held until the 66th minute when the Wildcats' Megan Dias scored twice in a 5-minute span to give WSC the brief lead before Elliott re-tied things in the closing minutes on a Tia Lopez assist.
NSU then held the Wildcats without a shot on goal in either overtime period and forced WSC goalkeeper Emily Walker to make a pair of saves in the in the second overtime.
Freshman Mallory Van Hout led the NSU offensive attack, taking six of the Wolves' 20 shots on the day. Royce added four.
