ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University head men's basketball coach
Paul Sather has announced his first wave of signees for the 2010-11 season. The group includes South Dakota native Dustin Tetzlaff, Tom Parks of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Australian import Trent Zomer. The three – along with Aberdeen Central High School product Jared Hannigan, who signed during the early period – will enroll in classes and join the Wolves on the court for the 2010-11 campaign.
Tetzlaff (6-7, 195, Forward), a Watertown native and a 2009 graduate of Watertown High School, will have three years of eligibility remaining after playing at the University of South Dakota last season. He appeared in 13 of the Coyotes' 32 games, helping the team to a 9-4 record in those games. Tetzlaff's capped a stellar high school career with numerous state-wide honors. He was tabbed to the first team all-state squad and named as the AA Player of the Year. Tetzlaff was also a finalist for the South Dakota Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year awards.
“Dustin is a versatile player with size that can play on the perimeter or inside,” said Sather. “He can really rebound the basketball and make plays around the rim. He practiced against two great players every day while at USD and will be a tremendous fit to our basketball program here at Northern State.”
Parks (6-6, 200, Forward) comes to the Wolves with one year of eligibility
remaining. A Cheyenne, Wyo, native and a 2007 graduate of Air Force Prep, Parks spent one season at Sheridan College, averaging 14.2 points and 4.6 rebounds in 30 games played for the Generals, who reached the quarterfinals of the Region XI tournament. From there, he went to Youngstown State University of the Horizon League for his sophomore and junior seasons. Parks appeared in 36 games, starting 15 for the Penguins. He averaged 4.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in those games.
“Tom can really shoot the ball well for a big wing and brings a wealth of experience to our program,” said Sather, who also recruited Parks out of high school. “He will be a great fit to our team and Northern State University. He has been an exceptional student throughout his academic career and is looking forward to being a part of Northern State Basketball.”
Zomer (6-6, 225, Forward) will join the Wolves as a true freshman next season. A native of Victoria, Zomer attended Ringwood Secondary College during his prep years and played for the Ringwood Hawks Basketball Club for his representative playing experience. In his three seasons with the Hawks, he was named the Most Improved Player once and the team's MVP once. In 2006, Zomer led the Under-18 team to the Victoria championships and averaged 30 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. He was also named as the team captain and the state tournament MVP.
Also in 2006, he was selected to play for the state team – Victorian Metro – in the national championship tournament, where he averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds per game.
“Trent was one of the first recruits we got involved with when I got the job,” said Sather. “He has a great combination of size, strength, and athleticism that will bring some tremendous versatility to our team. He is a very physical player that can play facing the basket or be a presence in the paint.”
Sather and the Wolves will take to the court for their first full-team practice in October. The 2010-11 campaign officially kicks off in November.
