Box Score
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Wolves needed a win. Junior
Marty Gregor made sure they got it.
Gregor, who scored just two points on a pair of free throws late in the game, came up with a loose ball off a Dennis Williamson turnover with just under a minute left and the Wolves leading by five to help preserve Northern State University's 66-60 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball action.
The win lifts NSU to an even 13-13 overall and 9-10 in conference play and sets up a big show-down with Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday. SMSU narrowly escaped with a 70-69 win over Wayne State on Wednesday, leaving all three teams locked in a 3-way tie for seventh place in the conference standings.
MSUM, who entered the game mathematically eliminated from post-season play, put up a valiant effort at playing the spoiler on Wednesday. Sophomore Alex Novac put up 18 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots and played a key role in holding NSU to 47.6 percent from the floor in what turned into a physical contest.
The Dragons, however, had no answer for a 27-point effort from NSU senior
Mitch Boeck, who led three players in double figures on the night. Redshirt freshman
Collin Pryor added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench, while junior
Derek Hoellein chipped in 11.
The Wolves survived on their ability to get to the free throw line, shooting 34 free throws on the night. Despite making just 23 of those free tosses, NSU had more than double the free throw makes and attempts as the Dragons.
Wednesday's win also put a stop to MSUM's 3-game win streak over the Wolves, dating back to last season.
The Wolves now turn their attention to Saturday's season finale match-up with SMSU. The game will mark the final home game for Boeck and the final regular season game for head coach
Don Meyer, who will be honored prior to tip-off. Ticket gates will open at 4 p.m. ahead of the women's contest, which will tip-off at 8 p.m.
