DICKINSON, N.D. – Ninth-ranked (NAIA) Dickinson State University Blue Hawks used victories in four of the final five matches of the night to take a 23-15 dual meet victory over the Northern State University Wolves Wednesday night in non-conference action. It was the first dual of the season for both teams.
The Wolves got off to a quick start after
Corbin Surat picked up a pin in the second minute of his 125-pound match. 133-pounder
Ian Muirhead used a pair of escapes and a riding time point in the third quarter to force overtime in his match, then got the take-down in the sudden victory period to take a 9-7 decision over DSU's Kevin Hansen and give the Wolves a 9-0 cushion.
The Blue Hawks, however, rebounded quickly with a fall at 141 pounds and a major decision at 149 pounds to take a 10-9 lead with six matches left to go. NSU's
Blake Lundgren responded with a 7-1 decision over Brad Steele at 157 pounds to put the Wolves back on top at 12-10.
That lead proved to be short-lived, however, as the Blue Hawks reeled off four straight wins, including a major decision in the 184-pound bout. Cameron Schrempp's 3-1 overtime decision over Brent Foscheim at 197 pounds sealed the victory for DSU.
Returning All-American
Matt Meuleners added a parting shot for the Wolves, using a third-period escape and a riding time point to take a 2-0 win over DSU's Cody Jamgaard.
The Wolves are off until Dec. 12, when they take on a pair of Division I opponents in South Dakota State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Both duals will take place in Brookings, S.D.
