ABERDEEN, S.D. – After a scoreless first half, the Northern State University Wolves exploded for two goals in the first four minutes of the second half en-route to a 3-1 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.
NSU senior Kendra Titze opened the flood gates with a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute after UMC was whistled for a hand ball in the box, while sophomore Liz Royce followed almost exactly two minutes later with her third goal of the season off a Kirsten Saunders assist.
The Golden Eagles closed the gap to just one goal in the 56th minute with a sliding goal in front of the net. NSU goalkeeper Dee Wood intercepted a UMC cross pass, but lost the ball amid a crowd of players. UMC freshman Brittany Taylor then came sliding in and knocked the loose ball into the back of the net.
The Wolves, however, regained their two-goal cushion in the 64th minute on another Kendra Titze score. Titze took aim with a 30-yard free kick and put it just over the top of the keeper's hands for her second goal of the game and of the season.
The win is the third straight for the Wolves, who remain unbeaten in their last seven games. That stretch includes three straight double-overtime draws to open NSIC play. NSU improves to 5-2-4 on the year and 3-0-3 in league action. UMC slipped to 0-9-2 overall and 0-6-0 in the loop.
Sunday's match marked the end of a four-game home stretch for the Wolves, who now take to the road for four straight. That adventure begins next Saturday at Bemidji State and continues on Sunday at Minnesota-Duluth.
