ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University freshman
Mallory Van Hout broke a 1-1 stalemate with her second goal of the season in the 76th minute of Saturday's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer match-up between the Wolves and the visiting Concordia University-St. Paul Golden Bears. Van Hout headed a high free kick from senior
Kendra Titze and headed it into the far side of the net for the go-ahead goal, snapping a four-game NSU skid in the process.
The two teams entered Saturday's contest tied for eighth in the conference standings with three games left to go in the regular season. The top eight in the league will qualify for the post-season conference tournament. With the win, the Wolves improved to 6-6-4 overall and 4-4-3 in the league, moving into a tie for seventh with St. Cloud State. NSU will host the Huskies on Sunday.
CU slipped to 5-8-1 on the season and 4-6-0 in league matches and to tenth in the standings.
The Golden Bears opened the match with a blitzkrieg strike, scoring just 26 seconds into the match on an unassisted Kari Janes goal. Janes stole the ball from the NSU defense on the far side of the field and slammed home a cross-goal shot from 20 yards out.
NSU answered in the 54th minute after taking advantage of a penalty in the box. That infraction set up a penalty kick opportunity for Titze, who scored her third goal of the season, two of which have come in PKs.
After battling through a 20-minute scoreless stretch that featured a brief period of steady rainfall, the Wolves again took advantage of another CU foul. The Golden Bears were whistled for the foul just outside the box on the end line, setting up a short corner kick-like opportunity for the Wolves. Titze took the free kick and sent the ball high and across the goal and directly to the head of Van Hout, who knocked the ball down and into the net for the game-winner.
The Golden Bears won the battle of shots on goal by a 10-4 margin, but NSU senior goalkeeper
Dee Wood played shut-down ball after the initial strike, making nine total saves to hold CU to just the one score.
CU now hits the road to face the University of Mary tomorrow. The Marauders handed SCSU a 2-1 loss on Saturday. The Wolves and Huskies face off on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at NSU's Jerde Field.
