FAYETTE, Iowa – Upper Iowa's Liz Kaluzinski needed less than 90 seconds to tally her first goal of the day and less than five minutes in the second half to register her second to spur the Peacocks to a 4-1 win over Northern State University on Sunday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.
The loss is the fourth straight for the Wolves, who now drop into a tie for eighth in the NSIC standings with three games left in the regular season. The top eight will advance to the NSIC post-season tournament. The Wolves, now 5-6-4 overall and 3-4-3 in conference play, are tied with Concordia-St. Paul for the eighth spot with 12 points, while UIU (7-6-1, 3-5-1 NSIC) is lurking just behind with 10 points.
NSU plays host to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday to kick off a crucial final homestand. The Wolves will also face off against St. Cloud State (5-4-0 NSIC) on Sunday before finishing off the season at Mary (3-3-4 NSIC) the following Saturday.
Kaluzinski opened the day with a slow roller into the net just 89 seconds into the contest off a Shaina Marnell assist. Following a scoreless remainder of the half, the sophomore blasted a 30-yard shot over the hands of the goalkeeper just 4:05 into the second period for her ninth goal of the season.
She then assisted on the Peacocks' third goal of the day just two minutes later on an Alyssa Petersburg diving header. UIU rounded out their day with a Valeria Ptasinski score in the 76th minute, hooking her corner kick attempt into the net.
The Wolves finally got on the board in the 82nd minute on a
Maggie Fedor penalty kick. Fedor collected her sixth goal of the season with the PK score, but it was too little, too late for the Wolves.
UIU out-shot the Wolves by a 19-9 margin, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. NSU sophomore
Kaylee McDonald had three shots to pace the Wolves, two of which were on frame.
