DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs needed just over 11 minutes to score their first and only goal of the day, then held the Northern State University Wolves scoreless for the remaining 78 minutes of the game to hold on for a 1-0 victory over the Wolves Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action.
The loss is the second straight for the Wolves, who had not lost since a Sept. 11 setback to Nebraska-Kearney. NSU now sits at 5-4-4 overall and 3-2-3 in NSIC play. The Bulldogs improved to 7-3-2 on the season and 7-1-0 in the league.
Following the lead-off goal, the two teams settled in for a defensive showdown for the remainder of the contest. Although the Bulldogs out-shot the Wolves 9-5 on the day, nearly every other statistical category came out a wash.
In the end, however, it was a header from UMD's Maria Leider that was the difference maker, as she took the assist from Ashley Brown and found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Wolves remain on the road next weekend for another pair of crucial NSIC match-ups. NSU takes on Winona State and Upper Iowa on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
