LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Colorado Christian University Cougars waited until nearly the last minute before breaking up a game-long draw and scoring the lone goal of the day and sending the Northern State University Wolves out with a 1-0 loss and a 3-game winless streak to start the season.

The loss, NSU's third straight to open the 2009 season, concludes the Wolves' opening tour through the high-altitude regions of Colorado.  The Wolves began the year with two games against Fort Lewis and Adams State in Alamosa before Tuesday's stop in Lakewood.

After a fairly even first half, the host Cougars kicked their offensive attack up a notch, getting 14 of their 20 shots off in the second period.  Eight of those 14 were on goal, including the game-winner in the 86th minute.  CCU's Krista Hoffer picked up a loose ball and set up teammate Jessica Smith for her first goal of the season.  Smith took the pass and chipped her shot over the outstretched hands of NSU goalkeeper Dee Wood for the score.

As a team, the Cougars, now 2-0 on the young season, claimed a 20-10 advantage in shots and a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.  Junior Maggie Fedor paced the Wolves with three shots, while reserve Katie Anderson put both of her shots on goal.

CCU reserve Abby Larsen took six shots to lead the way for the Cougars, four of which were on goal.

The Wolves return to Aberdeen this weekend to host Jamestown on Friday night.  First kick for that game, which is the team's annual Cancer Awareness match, is slated for 11 p.m. at Swisher Field.  Admission to the event is free, but the team will be collecting donations for the American Cancer Society at the match.
