Complete Weight Throw Results
HOUSTON, Texas – Northern State University junior
Amanda Madden just keeps raising the bar. Madden, who had never competed in the weight throw until arriving on campus, set a new NSU school record three times this season, the latest coming on Friday when she posted a heave of 18.10 meters (59-4.75 feet) to finish second at the NCAA Division II National Championships and earn her second straight All-America distinction in that event.
“Amanda competed very, very well,” said NSU coach
Brenda Fuller. “She was very relaxed and ready to go today. Plus, she's been consistent all year, and that helps when you get to this level.”
Madden, who was seventh in the event at last year's championships, was ranked fifth in the nation coming into Friday's culminating competition. She posted a mark of 18.07 meters (59-3.50 feet) in the preliminary round, sitting second in the field of 15 heading into finals.
She then proceeded to better that mark in her second throw of the finals to reaffirm her standing in the field. Madden becomes the seventh NSU All-American in the throwing events since 1988, while her runner-up finish is the highest finish by a Wolves' athlete in the school's NCAA history. She is also an Academic All-American for her efforts in the classroom.
Defending national champion Tara Cooper of Ashland University won the weight throw with a toss of 19.77 meters (64-10.50 feet).
