MORRIS, Minn. – The Northern State University swimming team earned their first win of the season Friday by a 112-101 margin over the University of Minnesota-Morris in dual action.
The Wolves are now 1-1 in dual action on the year.
“We had our first win of the season and we are pleased with the efforts of our team. We were down five athletes going into the meet but our team came through with some solid performances and raced well,” explained NSU head coach Elyce Kastigar. “We had seven personal best swims from (Brittany) Hiten, (Brooke) Larson, (Alana) King, (Heather) Maier and (Laura) McCowan and we have a longer event format tomorrow with some longer individual events. With the good performances from our first two meets we expect tomorrow to bring some good performances.”
The Northern State win was fueled behind eight first-place finishes on the night, with Brooke Larson, Laura McCowan, and Christine Retzlaff leading the way with two wins apiece, and Retzlaff and Larson also earned top honors in the Wolves 400-yard medley relay victory. Sarah Iwerks and Jordan Robles were also a part of the team that broke the school record in the event with a time of 4:25.67.
Retzlaff earned first-place finishes in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard backstroke. Those wins coupled with her help in the 400-yard medley relay victory helped her have a hand in 29 points on the night.
Larson's night was similar, as she also had a hand in 29 Northern points with her first-place finish in the 200-yard free and the 100-yard free, as well as the 400-yard medley relay.
McCowan's two wins came in the 1000-yard free and the 500-yard free, giving her 18 individual points on the night.
Robles earned a solo victory in the 50-yard free, accounting for another nine points, giving her a total of 24 points that she was a part of during the dual.
The Wolves are next in action tomorrow when they will take on the UM-Morris Cougars and Morningside College in a double dual that is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
