DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs waited until the very end before figuring out a way past a staunch Northern State University defense, slipping a corner kick into the net and escaping with a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinal round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference post-season tournament Wednesday evening.
After coming up empty for just more than 88 minutes of regulation play, the second-seeded Bulldogs took advantage of their 11th corner kick of the second half to find their way onto the scoreboard. UMD's Whitney Wilson sent the ball into the box for reserve midfielder Molly Nepote, who notched her first goal of the season for the game-winner with 1:48 left on the clock.
NSU had been able to keep the Bulldogs out of the net for the majority of the game, thwarting every UMD attempt at the goal. Wolves goalkeeper
Dee Wood made 10 saves on the night to aid in that effort.
Offensively, the Wolves got a pair of shots on goal from juniors
Maggie Fedor and
Kendra Titze, but UMD goal tender and newly crowned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year Hanna Bengston made the save on both shots to keep the Wolves at bay.
With the win, UMD now advances to the semifinal round of the tournament, which will be hosted by top-seeded Winona State University, who also escaped with a slim 1-0 win over eighth-seeded Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday.
