ST. PAUL, Minn. - The office of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced Monday that Northern State sophomore
Mikayla Barondeau has been named the league's Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
A Frederick, S.D. native, Barondeau earns the honor after helping the Wolves to a 1-1 record over the weekend at the NSIC Holiday Hoops Fest while averaging 12.5 points, 17.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 3.0 steals and 39.5 minutes of action each game.
In the Wolves' 60-64 loss to Minnesota State on Saturday, Barondeau set a new NSU all-time mark with 22 rebounds, breaking the previous record of 21 set by Myrna Becker in 1979. She also totaled 12 points, three assists, a block, and four steals giving her the first double-double of the season for the Wolves and her seventh in a Northern State uniform.
In Sunday's 62-58 win over Minnesota, Crookston, she notched 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals giving her her second-consecutive double-double and her eighth thus far in her young career.
So far this season Barondeau is second on the team averaging 10.4 points and leading the team with 10.8 rebounds per game. She is second on the team with 14 assists, and six blocks, and leads the team with eight steals.
This is the first NSIC Athlete of the Week award for her career.
Barondeau and her teammates will next be in action on Friday when they travel to Wayne, Neb. to tangle with the Wayne State College Wildcats at 6:00 p.m.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
