COMPLETE RESULTS
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Northern State's wrestling team headed to Warrensburg, Mo. for the University of Central Missouri duals on Saturday, January 26. Action on the day included three rounds of duals. The Wolves battled in tight decisions early in the day, falling 12-19 to #20 Central Missouri and 17-21 to Truman State. They took a big 30-19 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the final dual of the day.
Northern received consisten strong performances from several members of the squad. Freshman Ryan Larsen (149-lb.) improved to 12-8 on the year with three big wins on the day. Larsen took a 6-2 win over Central Missouri's Cory Bloodgood and an 11-1 major decision over Truman State's Steve Kueny. To finish with a perfect 3-0 record on the day, Larsen defeated SIUE's Matt Mitchell 10-4.
Also going 3-0 on the day was Todd Naasz (197-lb.), who pinned two of his three opponents in the first period of the matches. He started the day with a 4-2 decision. Naasz is now 14-4 on the year and has won each of his last five matches.
David Schiley (141-lb.) is now 16-7 this season, adding three wins to his record. He earned a close 8-7 win over Grant Baker (UCM) and a 7-3 win over Mitchell Bainbridge (TSU). Schiley wrapped up the day with another close decision, edging out SIUE's Nick Shumate 9-7.
The Wolves were successful early in both of their first two duals of the day. After dropping their first two matches against #20 Central Missouri, Northern rebounded to tie the score 6-6 with two big wins. From there, however, Central Missouri overpowered the Wolves and took four of the next six decisions on their way to the 19-12 win.
Northern led 11-3 following the four weight classes against Truman State. Truman soon turned the tide to take back the lead, winning each of the next four matches. Naasz's pin in the second to last match brought the Wolves back to within a single point, 17-18 with the heavyweight match serving as the deciding bout. Jared Little gave it his all in three low scoring periods, but eventually fell 3-2, giving Truman State the 21-17 win.
In the Wolves' win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, the Wolves jumped out to a 12-6 lead. They won six of the ten weight classes, although SIUE managed to gain two pins and a major decision. Northern received pins from Phillip Downs (165-lb.) and Naasz. They also gained points from two SIUE forfeits to take the 30-19 win.
