ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Mavericks of Minnesota State Mankato defeated the Wolves soccer team 1-0 Friday afternoon at Jerde Field. Minnesota State improves to 4-1 on the season, with their only loss going against #1-ranked Metro State. They snapped NSU's three game winning streak and dropped the Wolves to 4-2 on the season.
The Wolves were even with the Mavericks in shots taken through the first half. Both teams got off three, although MSU took the only shot on goal of the half. The game was scoreless going into halftime. Minnesota State began to rocket off shots in the second half, totaling 12 additional shots before the game was out. Kristin Luedtke notched her first collegiate goal, which was also a game winner, at the 60:49 mark. Minnesota State had 15 total shots in the game and six shots on goal.
Northern handled the Minnesota State defense well and controlled the ball for a good portion of the second half. Unfortunately, the team did not see many scoring opportunities. Except for the lone goal scored, the Wolves' defense kept the Mavericks from seeing a clear net and played tight with the soon-to-be NSIC squad. MSU, who is averaging nine shots on goal per game, managed just six against the NSU defense. Steph Conolly (Jr., Red Deer, Alberta) led the team with two shots in the game. Kit Grace (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) had five saves in the game and now has a season record of 2-2.
The Wolves continue non-conference action at Jerde Field this Sunday, Sept. 9, hosting South Dakota at 1:00 pm.
