ABERDEEN, S.D. - Kati Bronson put a penalty kick in the lower right corner of the net to give the Wolves a 1-0 edge over Southwest Minnesota State Sunday afternoon at Jerde Field. The goal came in the final minute of the battle, as the game went scoreless through the first 89 minutes of play. The Wolves are 10-3-2 with a 3-0-1 league record, while the Mustangs are now 2-9-2 with a 1-2-1 NSIC record.
Northern State dominated the shot chart throughout the game, taking 11 in the first half and finishing with 18, while the Mustangs had just five shots in the game. The Wolves were not able to create clear scoring opportunities, however, and went to the final minute of the game in a 0-0 stalemate.
Northern was granted a penalty kick after Bronson was thrown out of the box and out of bounds as a pass was kicked toward the SMSU keeper. With just :54 seconds remaining in the game, Bronson gave her team all it needed for the win, slipping the kick into the right side of the goal.
Bronson (F, 5-8, So., Spokane, Wash.) was Northern's leading offensive threat all day, as she took eight shots and three shots on goal in the game against the Mustangs. With her fifth goal of the season, Bronson is now tied as the team's second-leading scorer.
Maggie Madrid and
Kirsten Saunders each added an additional shot on goal for the Wolves to set the team's mark at five in the game. Kit Grace and
Dee Wood shared periods in the net, with Wood making the lone save of the game.
The Mustangs had five shots and one shot on goal in the game. Keeper Kayla Borstad made four saves before giving up the penalty kick goal.
The Wolves are on the road next weekend, playing MSU Moorhead on Saturday and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday. Both games will start at 1:00 pm.
