NORTHERN STATE FOOTBALL: FACILITIES HISTORY

Dacotah Bank Stadium is the fourth home of Northern State football since the inaugural season in 1902, following Simmons Field, Old Swisher Field, and the current site of Swisher Field off Roosevelt Street in Aberdeen.

Simmons Field
Simmons Field was adjacent to Simmons Junior High and was rented from the Aberdeen Public Schools for Northern football use. The field area was noted at seating up to 4,000 people. As the student body grew, as well as the support from the surrounding communities, safety problems were created due to the large crowds for Northern home games. The Wolves 1971 Gypsy Days game versus Minnesota State was said to be one of the largest crowds ever in the city of Aberdeen with estimates between 7,000-9,000. Despite an 8 p.m. kickoff, seats will filled by 6:30 p.m. at Simmons Field. The Wolves ultimately defeated the Mavericks, 16-14 in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

Old Swisher Field
Northern State President Dr. Norbert K. Baumgart authorized the long-awaited athletic field in the early 1970s. Brown County donated the 17-acre site to the city of Aberdeen, which donated the land to the college. The South Dakota legislature then authorized 500,000 dollars for the construction of the 6,000 seat stadium in 1974. The faculty of Northern recommended that the new facility be named after Clark Swisher, who had served 23-years as head football coach. Old Swisher Field was located on the Northeast side of Aberdeen on 8th Avenue and included both a football field and track. The complex was finished in 1975 and was the home of the Wolves until 2004.

Swisher Field
In 2005 the 3.2 million dollar Clark Swisher Activities Complex was dedicated to the long time coach and athletic director. The facility is home to Northern State football and track and field, as well as Aberdeen Central football, soccer, and track and field, Roncalli football, and Presentation College football. Clark Swisher Athletic Complex includes a 6,000-seat football facility, an eight-lane all-weather surface outdoor track with exceptional field event areas, new locker room and training room facilities and a tailgate area just south of the football field. Swisher Field itself features a synthetic field turf surface, making it ideal for a high-use facility. Fans of all ages are able to enjoy games at Swisher Field with the inclusion of a large concession area, full tailgate facility, and Kids Zone play area.
