Live AudioAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team will remain on the road this Sunday and Monday in NSIC action against Upper Iowa University. The Wolves and Peacocks are slated for a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. each day.
The Wolves enter the weekend after a league opening sweep of Southwest Minnesota State, improving to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC. The two teams were unable to play the first day of doubleheaders due to poor field conditions in Marshall. Northern took advantage of Mustang errors in the two wins, while playing errorless defense in 16 innings of action.
Colton Boucher (3-0) and
Marcus Manderbach (2-1) tallied the wins for the Wolves on the hill, while senior
Dillon Lee notched his first save of the season. The Wolves notched ten hits in the two games led by sophomore
Jack Schmidt who went 4-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Northern continues to see production offensively with a team average of .349 in 14 games played. The Wolves have combined for 182 hits, 30 doubles, nine triples, 24 homeruns, 140 runs scored, 121 runs batted in, and a team on base percentage of .425.
Jack Schmidt and
Matt Stubbs are leading the NSU attack hitting .534 and .460 respectively this season. The duo has also combined for 60 of the team's 182 hits and 45 of the team's 140 runs scored.
Lucas Lorenz is also on the hunt for a solid sophomore season leading the team with a .926 slugging percentage and seven homeruns.
Colton Boucher leads the NSU starters with a 3.55 ERA this season. The senior has also thrown a team leading 25.1 innings and tallied 29 strikeouts.
Dillon Lee has been crucial in relief, making six appearances this season with a 0.77 ERA and .143 opponent batting average.
About the Peacocks- Upper Iowa enters the weekend on a 3-game win streak versus Minot State in the NSIC opener.
- The Peacocks are currently 7-8 overall and 3-1 in league action with a sixth place standing in the NSIC.
- Recording victories a weekend ago were starters Tyus Adkins (2-2) and Mitch Moser (3-0) and relief pitcher Brandon Nicholson (1-1).
- Moser also led the team offensively, tallying six hits, with two doubles and a triple, in the four game set.
- Offensively Upper Iowa tallies seven players hitting above .300 on the year, led by Nick Kleitsch hitting .500 and Callahan Seehase hitting .409.
- UIU is hitting .295 as a unit with 150 hits, 29 doubles, 11 triples, and six homeruns. They have also combined for 116 RBI, 134 runs scored and a team on base percentage of .409.
- The Peacock pitching staff is led by Mitch Moser with three wins in 2016. He has also thrown a team leading 25.0 innings and 25 strikeouts.
