Northern State University Athletics

The annual I Hate Winter weekend is hosted during the spring semester each year, center around Northern State men's and women's basketball contests. The exact inception date is not fully clear, however this long standing Wolves athletics tradition began in the confines of the Aberdeen Civic Arena and solidified in the early days of the Barnett Center. 

Over the decades, I Hate Winter gives Northern State students, alumni, and fans the opportunity to combat the winter blues with a tropical themed weekend featuring Wolves athletic events, baseline hot tubs, themed giveaways, and specials at local retailers and Northern State supporters. In the spring semester of 1993, the first official "Thunder the Wolf' debuted at the I Hate Winter basketball games. Following the 2019 celebrating, which referenced the 2008 Will Ferrell movie Semi-Pro, Northern State Athletics was awarded the NACMA Gold Award for Static Promotion Ad in Group III.
